Wildlife Aging Techniques: From Field to Laboratory (4:00-6:00)

Discover the science behind accurately aging ungulates at this hands-on workshop hosted by the Wildlife Analytics Lab from Lethbridge Polytechnic. Join us for an interactive session where we will: 1. Demonstrate field techniques for aging ungulates using tooth eruption and wear. 2. Explore advanced laboratory methods for precise aging through cementum analysis. 3. Teach proper techniques for extracting teeth from jawbones for analysis. 4. Provide insights into the meticulous process of tooth preparation for cementum evaluation. This workshop is ideal for researchers, biologists, wildlife managers, and students who want to enhance their understanding of wildlife aging methods. Attendees will gain practical skills and firsthand exposure to tools and processes used in a professional lab. A discount on future tooth sample submissions to the WAL will also be given to participants (for personal use). Learn how cementum analysis offers a more accurate alternative to traditional methods, providing valuable insights into wildlife population dynamics and informing management. Whether you’re collecting samples in the field or interpreting results, this session will deepen your expertise and appreciation for the science of wildlife tooth aging.
